Our Language Arts program encourages students to develop a life-long love of reading and writing. The Daily 5 classrooms produce productive, highly engaged students who are developing a true love of literacy.

The Daily 5 is a frameworh for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and worhing independently.

Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, worhing independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring.

These choices include:

  1. Read to Self,
  2. Work on Writing,
  3. Read to Someone,
  4. Listen to Reading, and
  5. Word Work.

Islamic Studies (Quran, Arabic, Deen)

website ADS 22

Our Islamic Studies program includes Qur’an, Deen (religion), and Arabic. We strive to provide our students with a fundamental knowledge and understanding of Islam and to enable our students to integrate Islam into their daily practices.

We make learning Deen fun and strive to imbue a love of the Qur’an and sunnah in the students of ADS. Duas and practices learned in deen aren’t left in the Deen classroom. Students begin lessons and activities with the duas they learn, and lessons are integrated into the daily curriculum to connect their deen lessons with real life experiences.

For Qur’an and Arabic, students are given a placement test at the beginning of the school year and instructed in leveled courses (beginners’, intermediate, proficient, and advanced proficient) to ensure that students are learning and excelling at the appropriate level.

Besides daily practices, celebrating Eid, observing important Islamic dates, and incorporating school-wide Islamic Studies competitions, teachers are also encouraged to make connections between the lessons of core subjects and Islamic teachings. Just as teachers are encouraged to show cross-subject connections in math, science, social studies, and Language Arts, dots are connected between these core subjects and the Islamic Studies courses to offer an enriched learning experience for our Muslim studies. For example, during the month of November, students learn about the history of Thanksgiving in social studies, but students will also focus on the idea of striving to say “alhamdulillah”, be grateful for everything and everyone in their lives, and thanking Allah (SWT) at every opportunity.
